Washing Machine

Our washing machine finally is frizzing out after about 10 years. I was just sending a short note out to see if anyone knows of someone who has one for ..as close to free, as possible. Thanks so much. seadving@aol.com 682-3994 Renee

POTTY WATCH

I know there are several people who are attempting potty training right now. Me being one of them. My sister called me and told me about this watch that her friend has been using on her little boy. I have not personally tried it yet, but have heard good reviews and am planning on ordering one. You have your child wear the watch and set the timer for 30, 45, or 60 minutes and when it goes off your child needs to sit on the potty til he goes. I'm not sure where to find them around town, but have found them online for about $10.

Pita Bread, a fun change?

For step by step pictures...go here www.safelygatheredin.blogspot.com/2009/01/food-storag-friday-whole-wheat-pita.html

I think it looks like a fun change from plain bread. Not so sure about the 500 degree oven, but I'll let you know....
Someone put a comment on the post that to easily get honey off a spoon you should spray it with Pam first. Sounds like a good tip!
Then she also links you to their chicken salad recipe...looks good too!

Enjoy!

Whole Wheat Pita Bread
Epicurious.com

2 1/2 teaspoons yeast
1 teaspoon honey
1 1/4 cups warm water
2 cups flour, plus additional for kneading
1 cup whole-wheat flour
1/4 cup oil
1 teaspoon salt
Cornmeal for sprinkling baking sheets

Combine yeast, honey and 1/2 cup warm water in a large mixing bowl. Stir together then set aside for five minutes. In a separate bowl, mix white flour and wheat flour together with a whisk, set aside. After the five minutes, make sure the yeast mixture is foamy. Add 1/2 cup of the flour mixture to the yeast mixture. Combine. Cover with saran wrap and let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes.

After yeast mixture has doubled, add oil, salt, remaining 3/4 cup warm water, and the rest of the flour mixture. Stir well into a dough. Dump dough onto a floured surface and knead dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little bit of flour when it is needed. Shape into a ball and put in an oiled bowl. Cover with saran wrap and let rise for one hour.

When dough has doubled, punch down and separate into eight pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, flatten with hand, then roll out with rolling pin to make a circle with a 6-7 inch diameter. Place dough round on a cookie sheet sprinkled with cornmeal. Roll out all the sections. Cover cookie sheets with clean cloths and let rest for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 500 degree F. Place an oven rack on the lower part of the oven and remove the other rack. Lay the pitas, four at a time, directly on the oven rack. Cook for 2 minutes or until just puffed and golden, turn over and cook an additional minute. Let rest on a cooling rack for two minutes then wrap in foil to keep warm until serving.

Free Baking Classes in Tucson!

Robin Bringhurst sent me the following information.

"King Arthur Flour
, one of my FAVORITE companies since I am from New England, is doing free baking classes here in Tucson!!! I will miss it 'cause of my daughter's baptism. Darn it. Oh well, here is the link:
http://www.kingarthurflour.com/baking/national-baking-classes.html#Arizona

If it doesn't work go to kingarthurflour.com and find the national baking classes. This is a great company, they give you really useful tips and their products are great. Their ground whole wheat and white whole wheat are really finely ground, the best I've found."

Thanks, Robin!

Fun with Food Storage

Okay, so I am still looking at all of it, but so far, it looks super easy, really inspirational, and I am hoping to follow the baby steps program and get some sort of a food storage program going.

ALSO, I think today is the last day to enter for the give away stuff, and it would be well worth your time to comment. Assuming we can win, being out of staters.

Check it out, it looks like fun!

Freezer Meals

I need your advice!!

I am getting ready to do "once a month cooking" or freezer meals with my mom.

I need any ideas or advice you may have.
Does anyone know of a website that has recipes or do's and don'ts?
I am unclear what recipes can or can't be frozen. What should be cooked before it goes to the freezer or what should be cooked after??

For example, I did a rice casserole once... cooked it, froze it and then reheated it. It was fine with the exception of the rice. -It was really dry.

Help! any input or ideas will help.
