How do you take a newborn and a two-year-old grocery shopping? Miles needs the child seat in the cart because I know he won't sit still enough without it, but I obviously can't just stick Hailey's car seat in the cart because there will be no room for food. I'm at a loss...What have you guys in the same situation done?

I get special snacks for Kayden and bribe him to sit down in the cart and I then ask him to help me stack each item in the cart. He thinks it is fun. If he stands up in the cart I take his treats away. (they have to be special treats he really really wants) Then I plan my trip ahead, knowing exactly where to get what -marathon like~! (obviously the infant is in the carseat up top. hope this helps. otherwise, shop at night, or swap babysitting. -just a couple thoughts
I used an infant carrier called a hotsling. That little contraption saved my life. I had a carseat that didn't fit on the top of the basket so I always had to put it in the basket-which worked fine when Darrell was there to push another basket but not by my lonesome! It fits tiny infants up to 30lb toddlers. It's super easy to put on and can be folded small to fit in a diaper bag. I had to go way across town to find mine but now they sell them at Target in awesome colors. (there is another brand called Peanut shells, I am not sure how they work but they look similar)
I have some advice! Go ALONE! I have learned the hard way-over and over that taking kids to the grocery store=a stressed out grumpy mom! I usually go at night when Rob gets home. I'm always happy to help too!
I also used a baby carrier/ sling while the baby was still little. I've also been known to take two carts with me.
Thanks for the ideas!! I'll have to try them out. I could go at night when Joseph's home, but I have a thing about parking lots at night...I don't like them! Joey's got grad school at night so he can't go... Hmmmm...the idea about using two carts is pretty impressive. I think I'd be bonking at least one of my carts into displays or other customers if I tried that one. Sometimes I have a hard enough time steering one cart!!
Does Hailey's car seat fit sideways on top of the wide part of the cart? I always put the baby seat OVER where the food goes, and the toddler in the seat, (now one either walks or rides on my shoulders as well) but I put the food down under the baby chair or under the cart, then when I check out I put the carseat on the floor by me so they can put the food back in (cause they have no clue how to pack it around the baby!) and then back ontop of the cart to walk to the car. The sling would actually be the easiest (but if the baby is sleeping I like to leave it in the carseat).
What a great idea! Katie, I'm going to attempt shopping by myself w/ kids this week (although I like Emily's idea of no kids too) and I think I'll bring the sling as back up and if Hailey's asleep I'll try your idea for starters.
When I went shopping with Linden and Mya, I put Mya in a front pack and it worked perfectly. Lots of room for the groceries and Mya loved it so much that she never made a peek. Good luck.
